PCI Tab

PCI values (Pavement Condition Indices) are calculated in the PCI tab.  The system performs these calculations automatically. There are multiple fields in this module with special functions.  Several of these fields contain data imported from the Subsegments module while other fields allow you to input additional information than can affect the PCI.  Finally, there are a group of fields that display PCI calculations.  All of these fields and their functions are described in the table below:

Field Name

Special Function

Initial Distress PCI

The system totals all of the final deducts from the Distresses tab and subtracts that value from 100.  The PCI value is then entered into this field.

Note: This is a calculated value that cannot be edited by the user.

Strength Structural Index

International Roughness Index Value (IRI)

The user can enter values in these fields. They are not used in the system calculations.

Initial Strength and Roughness PCI

The user can enter values in these fields. These are the Strength and Roughness Factors that are carried over to the Supersegment Condition tab.

Distress, Strength, and Roughness Weighting Factor

By default, the values in these fields are carried over from the Pavement Standards module. You can choose to edit these values if needed; however, keep in mind that the total of the three must equal 100.

Note: These values are multipliers. They represent what percentage of the distress makes up the final PCI.

Final Distress PCI

The values in the Initial Distress PCI and Distress Weighting Factor fields will be multiplied to find this value.

Note: This is a calculated value that cannot be edited by the user.

Final Structural PCI

The values in the Initial Strength PCI and Structural Weighting Factor fields will be multiplied to find this value.

Note: This is a calculated value that cannot be edited by the user.

Final Roughness PCI

The values in the Initial Roughness PCI and Roughness Weighting Factor fields will be multiplied to find this value.

Note: This is a calculated value that cannot be edited by the user.

Inventory PCI

This field adds the Final Distress, Structural, and Roughness PCI values.

Note: This is a calculated value that cannot be edited by the user.

Load Factor

This is the sum of the Final Deduct values for all load-type distresses on the Distresses tab.

Note: This is a calculated value that cannot be edited by the user.

Non-Load Factor

This is the sum of the Final Deduct values for all non-load type distresses on the Distresses tab.

Note: This is a calculated value that cannot be edited by the user.

Environmental Factor

This is the sum of the Final Deduct values for all environmental-type distresses on the Distresses tab.

Note: This is a calculated value that cannot be edited by the user.

Override PCI

This field allows you to override the PCI calculated by the system.  If you choose, you can enter a PCI value in this field.  Your PCI value will then be used instead of the system PCI in subsequent calculations.

Current PCI

This is a calculated value that cannot be edited by the user. To determine this value, the system performs the following functions:

  • The system uses either the Inventory PCI or Override PCI value (if entered by the user).
  • Next, the system determines the time elapsed by subtracting the Inventory Date in the header from the current system date. If the Override PCI is used, the system uses the Override date and subtracts that from the current system date.
  • Using the Inventory or Override PCI, the system determines the proper slope. These slopes are set up in the Pavement Standards module.
  • To find the Current PCI, the system calculates: Inventory or Override PCI - (time elapsed * slope)

Example: Let's say you have a deterioration rate schedule where the slope equals 6.25 when the PCI is between 50 and 100. You're trying to find the Current PCI for a street with an Inventory PCI of 99. Since this PCI falls between 50 and 100, the system will use 6.25 as the slope. In 5 years, the street would have a PCI of: 99-(5*6.25), giving you a Current PCI of 81.28.

Weighted Rating

This field is calculated using the following equation:

100 - Current PCI x Priority Weighting Factor

The value in this field helps prioritize your repairs.

Note: The user cannot edit the value in this field. The Priority Weighting Factor comes from the user-entered value in the Pavement Standards module.

Condition

This field reflects the condition of the road. It can be auto-calculated based on the Inventory PCI and settings in the Pavement Condition Setup module. For more information about setting up this calculation go here.

Pavement Strength

This field updates the Pavement Strength on the subsegment module. It is calculated based on settings in the Pavement Parameters module, and values in the Initial Strength PCI field or the Inventory PCI and Load Factor fields. For more information about these calculations go here. While this field is updated automatically when the record is edited and saved, it can also be updated using the Reset Strength toolkit function.

Strength Lock

This checkbox locks the Pavement Strength field allowing the user to manually enter a value, instead of having it auto-calculate.
