Accident Validation Process

The Accident module Data Management module allows you to record details of your traffic accidents.  Based on the information found in your accident records, the system conducts a validation process to verify the location of the accident, direction of the accident, and type of accident that took place.  These validated results are then compiled in an Intersection Collision Diagram.  This diagram allows you to accurately project accident patterns and make recommendations for street improvements.  Listed below are the steps taken by the system upon a save to validate the user-entered accident data.

  1. First, the system checks to make sure there is at least one vehicle involvement record for the accident.  This is found on the Involvement tab of the Data Management module.

Note:  You must have at least one vehicle record associated with the accident before it can be saved.

  2. Then, depending on the Type of accident in the record, the following validations are performed:

Accident Type

System Validation Performed

Pedestrian and Fixed Object Accidents

The system makes sure that the vehicle involved was traveling in a valid direction ("S", "SW", "W", "NW", "N", "NE", "E", "SE").

Other Motor Vehicle Accidents:

Rear-End Collision

The system makes sure that both vehicles are noted as traveling in the same direction and that the direction is valid ("S", "SW", "W", "NW", "N", "NE", "E", "SE").

Other Motor Vehicle Accidents:

Head On Collision

The system makes sure that each vehicle involved was traveling in a valid direction. These are listed below:

Validation Process

Other Motor Vehicle Accidents:

Sideswipe Opposing

The system makes sure that the vehicles are traveling in compatible directions:

Cannot Travel

Other Motor Vehicle Accidents:

Sideswipe Overtaking

Both vehicles must be traveling in the same direction.

One of the vehicles must have the following pre-crash maneuvers:

  • Overtaking/passing
  • Changing Lanes
  • Avoiding Maneuver
  • Merging
  • Parking

The first vehicle must be traveling in a valid direction ("S", "SW", "W", "NW", "N", "NE", "E", "SE").

For Other Motor Vehicle Accidents: Angled Crash

Pre-Crash Maneuver

System Validation Performed

For Either Vehicle:

Left Turn or Stopping Awaiting Turn

The system makes sure that the vehicles are traveling in a valid direction. These are listed below:

Validation Process

For the First Vehicle: Right Turn

The system makes sure that the vehicles are traveling in a valid direction. These are listed below:

First Vehicle

For the Second Vehicle: Right Turn

The system makes sure that the vehicles are traveling in a valid direction. These are listed below:

Second Vehicle

If None of the Above Criteria is Met for an Angled Crash

The system makes sure that the accident is reasonable based on the following matrix:

None of the Above

If None of the Circumstances Above are Met:

For All Other Accident Types

The System makes sure that the first vehicle is traveling in a valid direction ("S", "SW", "W", "NW", "N", "NE", "E", "SE").
