Trace Tools

The Trace tools help users quickly visualize information about a sewer, storm, or water network. They trace the desired network and generate a temporary layer in the map. Note that the trace uses the relationships between records to find connected assets instead of using the geometry in the map.

Click the button.
Click on a Water Pipe on the map. The following pop-up appears:
Use the drop-down to select the type of water trace you wish to run.
- Isolation Valve - Traces Water Pipes outward from the location the user clicked on and finds the closest Water Isolation Valves.
Choose whether to enable or disable each related option:
- Include services in trace results - Directs the tool to show all of the Water Service lines attached to Pipes within the trace.
- Include hydrants in trace results - Directs the tool to show all of the Water Hydrants attached to Pipes within the trace.
- Include meter set locations in results - Directs the tool to show all of the Water Meter Locations attached to Pipes within the trace.
- Include a list of affected customers in results - Note: Although this option still appears within the tool, it is currently deactivated. Directs the tool to produce a list of customers associated with the Pipes, Hydrants, and Meter Locations along the trace. The tool will find the Addresses of the traced assets and then identify the Customers that are associated with those Addresses.
- Add to existing trace results - Directs the tool to add the results of the trace to the results of a previous trace. When disabled, the tool automatically creates a new layer for the trace results.
In the Label for results field, enter a name for the trace layer.
Click Load to begin the trace.
The tool automatically begins to trace outward from the selected Pipe and continues to trace Water Pipes until it comes to a Valve.
If the Valve is marked as an Isolation Valve, the trace highlights it and stops tracing pipes along that path.

Note: The tool checks the Valve record in Lucity to determine whether it is an Isolation Valve. It does not check any information within the feature class.
The trace results appear in the Table of Contents. The user can open the related Data Table from the Table Of Contents to view the data.

Click the button.
Click on a Sewer Pipe in the map. The following pop-up appears:
Use the drop-down to select the type of Sewer Trace you wish to run.
- Upstream – Traces all Pipes upstream of a selected point.
- Upstream Distance – Traces all Pipes within a designated distance upstream of a selected point.
- Upstream Segment - Traces all Pipes within a designated number of segments upstream of a selected point.
- Downstream - Traces all Pipes downstream of a selected point.
- Downstream Distance – Traces all Pipes within a designated distance downstream of a selected point.
- Downstream Segment - Traces all Pipes within a designated number of segments downstream of a selected point.
If you chose a Distance or Segment trace, enter the Units.
Choose whether to enable or disable the following options:
- Include services in trace results - Directs the tool to show all of the Sewer Service lines that are attached to Pipes along the trace.
- Include FOG facilities in trace results - Directs the tool to show all of the Sewer FOG Facilities that are attached to Pipes along the trace.
- Include IPT Facilities in trace results - Directs the tool to show all of the Sewer IPT Facilities that are attached to Pipes along the trace.
- Add to existing trace results - Directs the tool to add the results of the trace to the results of a previous trace. When disabled, the tool automatically creates a new layer for the trace results.
In the Label for results field, enter a name for the trace layer.
Click Load to begin the trace.
The tool automatically begins to trace in the desired direction.

The trace results are added to the Table of Contents and the Data Table displays all selected records.

Click the button.
Click on a Storm Pipe on the map. The following pop-up appears:
Use the drop-down box to select the type of Storm Trace to run.
- Upstream – Traces all Pipes upstream of a selected point.
- Upstream Distance – Traces all Pipes within a designated distance upstream of a selected point.
- Upstream Segment - Traces all Pipes within a designated number of segments upstream of a selected point.
- Downstream - Traces all Pipes downstream of a selected point.
- Downstream Distance – Traces all Pipes within a designated distance downstream of a selected point.
- Downstream Segment - Traces all Pipes within a designated number of segments downstream of a selected point.
If you chose a Distance or Segment trace, complete the Units field.
Choose whether to enable or disable the related options:
- Include BMP asset in trace results - Directs the tool to show all BMP Assets that are related to the Storm Conduits selected within the trace.
- Add to existing trace results - Directs the tool to add the results of the trace to the results of a previous trace. When disabled, the tool automatically creates a new layer for the trace results.
In the Label for results field, enter a name for the trace layer.
Click Load to begin the trace.
The tool automatically begins to trace in the desired direction.
The trace results appear in the Table of Contents and the Data Table displays all selected records.
