PCI Tab

PCI values (Pavement Condition Indices) are calculated in the PCI tab, which provides a mix of system- and user-populated fields that are used to calculate the overall condition of the road. The Current PCI field can be used in pavement modeling programs.

Field Name

Special Function

Strength Structural Index

International Roughness Index Value (IRI)

Users can enter values in these fields. These fields are not used in the system's calculations.

If this record represents the most recent inspection, these fields update the related fields in the Road Segment Inventory module.

Initial Distress PCI *

The PCI based on the distresses recorded during the inspection. The system adds all of the Final Deducts from the Distresses tab and subtracts that sum from 100.  The PCI value is then entered into this field. This value is multiplied by the Weighing Factor to calculate the Final Distress PCI.

Initial Strength PCI

The PCI of the road based only on the strength of the road. Users can enter a value in this field. This value is multiplied by the Weighing Factor to calculate the Final Structural PCI.

Initial Roughness PCI

The PCI of the road based only on the roughness of the roads surface. Users can enter a value in this field. This value is multiplied by the Weighing Factor to calculate the Final Roughness PCI.

Distress, Strength, and Roughness Weighting Factor

Multipliers that indicate what percentage of the total PCI each factor represents.

By default, these values are carried over from the Pavement Standards module. These values can be edited if desired; however, the sum of the three must equal 100.

Final Distress PCI *

Calculated as: Initial Distress PCI x Distress Weighting Factor = Final Distress PCI.

Final Structural PCI *

Calculated as: Initial Strength PCI x Structural Weighting Factor = Final Structural PCI.

Final Roughness PCI *

Calculated as: Initial Roughness PCI x Roughness Weighting Factor = Final Roughness PCI.

Inventory PCI *

Calculated as: Final Distress PCI + Final Structural PCI + Final Roughness PCI = Inventory PCI.

Load Factor *

The sum of the Final Deduct values for all load-type distresses on the Distresses tab.

Non-Load Factor *

The sum of the Final Deduct values for all distress types on the Distresses tab other than Load distresses.

Environmental Factor *

The sum of the Final Deduct values for all environmental-type distresses on the Distresses tab.

Override PCI

This field can be used to override the PCI calculated by the system.  To override it, enter a PCI value in this field, and a Date in the field beside it. The Override PCI value is then used in subsequent calculations, rather than the system PCI.

If this record represents the most recent inspection, this field can also be populated from a Road Segment Maintenance record by entering an Override PCI on that record and checking the Reset Field Insp PCI box.

Current PCI *

To determine this value:

  • The system finds either the Inventory PCI or Override PCI value (if entered by the user).
  • Then, it determines the time elapsed by subtracting the Inventory Date (found in the header) from the current system date. When using the Override PCI, the system subtracts the Override date from the current system date.
  • The system determines the proper slope for the Inventory PCI or Override PCI value. (Slopes are set up in the Pavement Standards module.)
  • The Current PCI is calculated as: Inventory PCI or Override PCI - (time elapsed * slope) = Current PCI.

Example: In a particular deterioration rate schedule, the slope is 6.25 for PCI values 50 to 100. The street's Inventory PCI is 99. Because this PCI falls within that range, the system uses 6.25 as the slope. In five years, the street would have a PCI of: 99 - (5*6.25), making the Current PCI 81.28.

Weighted Rating *

Calculated as: 100 - Current PCI x Priority Weighting Factor (established in the Pavement Standards module)

The value in this field helps prioritize repairs.

This is a calculated value that cannot be edited by the user.
